Maybe it doesn’t seem like “a big deal” but you just don’t feel like yourself. Perhaps you are at a crossroads in your life and your vision for your life isn’t matching up with your current reality. You might be experiencing more anxiety than normal that might even be leading to panic attacks.

Often people come to therapy thinking they just need someone to “fix” them or tell them what to do, but end up discovering that they have the ability to “fix” those problems with the help of a skilled counselor. The counselor isn’t there to provide the answers, rather they are there to help each client find the skills to take charge.

If you are finding yourself in a co-parenting relationship where there is constent conflict and you can’t even get close to resolving them, a parenting coordinator may be able to help keep the conflict out of court and help each parent learn how to better co-parent.

Parenting Coordination (PC) is a non-adversarial hybrid of case management, mediations, consultation, arbitration and recommendations to the court, usually in a high conflict custody situation. A parenting coordinator is a trained individual, usually an attorney or a mental health profession, who helps parents communicate, defuse tension and at times help make day-to-day child-rearing decisions. The goals of a PC are:
-
Protecting the child's best interest
-
Encouraging cooperation between parents
-
Encouraging respectful interactions between parents
-
Keeping parents out of court
The parameters of the PCs role can be set by the parties or can be ordered by the court. The Parent Coordinator meets with the family members, interviews the parties and the children, reads all documents related to the case and makes recommendations to the court. The PC also communicates with therapists, lawyers, schools, and other family members as decided in the scope set by the court.

The purpose of a PC is to work themselves out of a job. The PC attempts this by giving feedback on messages (email/text), helping parents focus on the needs of their children when making decisions and gradually training all parties to a less reactive style of interacting. Recommendations and updates are sent to the court, the attorneys and interested parties on a regular basis. Expert Review Cases that are new to the court but have an extensive history and multiple accusations between the parties, can pose complex problems.

Michele Holden, LCPC is a trained PC who has over 10 years of working with children and families. She is a member of the Association of Family & Conciliation Courts and completed their Parenting Coordinator training.
